Apremilast (Otezla)

What is apremilast?

Apremilast (Otezla) is an oral medication approved for the treatment of mild to severe plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It's generally recommended for patients who haven't responded adequately to topical treatments for their psoriasis.

One advantage of this medication over other systemic psoriasis treatments is its oral administration, eliminating the need for injections. Additionally, it is one of the few systemic psoriasis medications that does not act on your immune system, meaning it does not increase your risk of infection and does not necessitate regular blood work. However, it may not clear psoriasis as effectively as other systemic options.

What are possible side effects of apremilast?

The medication can cause side effects like diarrhea and weight loss, particularly during the initial weeks of treatment. Rarely, it may also lead to depression. If you have a history of depression, consult your healthcare provider before starting this medication.

How is apremilast used?

Apremilast is administered orally, with dosages typically taken twice a day. It's important to understand that psoriasis treatments manage symptoms but are not a cure. If you discontinue the medication, symptoms are likely to reappear within weeks to months. Insurance approval may be required for this medication.
