Q: Why does Rixis Dermatology require a credit card on file?

A: At Rixis Dermatology, we aim to simplify the billing process for our patients. By keeping a credit card on file, we can promptly settle any remaining balance after your insurance has processed your claim. If the balance goes unpaid for an extended period, the card on file will be billed as a failsafe. Many patients find this process convenient and efficient for managing their medical bills.

A: No, your card will not be charged automatically. After receiving your balance from insurance, we will contact you first to confirm how you’d like to handle the payment. Patient Experience

Q: What should I expect on my first visit?
A: For your first visit, please complete your medical history, insurance information, and intake forms in advance. Your treatment plan will be discussed during your appointment, and general information can be found on our Educational Resources pages.

Q: How can I provide feedback or file a complaint?
A: Your satisfaction is our priority. For immediate concerns, speak with our staff during your visit. For additional feedback or complaints, please email or call us. We value your input and may request feedback through email or text after your appointment.

Q: Is the practice owned by a private equity firm?

A: No, Rixis Dermatology is not owned by private equity; it is proudly locally owned. Dr. Stephanie Fabbro, MD, FAAD, oversees the practice with a focus on community-oriented, patient-centered care. While private equity ownership in healthcare can bring in financial resources and management expertise, it can also sometimes lead to concerns about the prioritization of financial performance over patient care. A study highlighted in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that private equity-owned healthcare practices may face pressures to increase revenue, which can affect the cost and quality of care provided to patients and lead to more adverse events (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2813379).

UNDERSTANDING DERMATOLOGY

Q: What is dermatology?

A: Dermatology is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the skin, hair, and nails. This specialty encompasses a wide range of disorders and diseases, from common acne and eczema to complex conditions like skin cancer. Dermatologists are skilled in helping to maintain the health and appearance of your skin.

Q: What is a dermatologist?

A: A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of the skin, hair, and nails. They undergo extensive training to diagnose and treat a wide variety of skin conditions and have the expertise to perform various surgical and cosmetic procedures. Dermatologists play a crucial role in the early detection and treatment of skin diseases, including skin cancer.

Q: Why do I need to see a dermatologist as opposed to my primary care physician or another doctor?

A: Dermatologists are the most qualified professionals for skin-related issues, offering a level of expertise beyond what a primary care physician typically provides. Their specialized training in skin health allows them to detect subtle signs of serious conditions, including early stages of skin cancer, and they are adept at managing complex skin diseases that require targeted treatments. For accurate diagnosis, advanced care, and access to the latest treatments and technologies in skin health, a visit to a dermatologist is indispensable.

Q: When should I consider visiting a dermatologist?

A: If you have persistent skin, hair, or nail disorders, unusual moles, or skin changes, or if you need expert advice on skincare and anti-aging treatments, a dermatologist is your go-to specialist. They play a vital role in not just treating but also in preventing skin diseases, and their guidance is crucial for maintaining long-term skin health. Regular dermatological check-ups can be a key component of your overall health strategy, especially for early detection of skin cancer and other serious conditions.

Q: Are skin checks for cancer necessary?

A: Yes. Regular skin checks by a dermatologist are essential for everyone, but they are particularly crucial for individuals with specific risk factors. These include a personal or family history of skin cancer, significant sun exposure or history of sunburns, the use of tanning beds, fair skin that burns or freckles easily, a large number of moles or atypical moles, a weakened immune system, and a history of precancerous skin lesions. Dermatologists are skilled in identifying even the most subtle changes in your skin that could indicate early stages of skin cancer. Early detection and treatment by a specialist dramatically improve outcomes. Moreover, dermatologists can offer personalized advice on protecting your skin and reducing your risk of developing skin cancer.

Q: Will a medical resident or student see me during my visit?

The attending physician will always have the final decision over your treatment. We encourage patient participation in the training process, though you may opt out if you prefer.
