Blue Light (PDT) InsTructions

Pre-Treatment Instructions

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure: For at least 48 hours before your treatment, avoid any form of sun exposure. This includes sunbathing, tanning beds, and sun lamps. Sun-damaged skin can adversely affect the treatment outcomes.

  2. Medications: Please inform your dermatologist of all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Some medications may increase skin sensitivity.

  3. Skin Care Routine: Do not apply any retinoid-based products or creams containing glycolic acid or benzoyl peroxide for at least 48 hours before the treatment.

  4. Shaving: Avoid shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment to prevent irritation.

  5. Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated in the days leading up to your treatment. Drink plenty of water.

  6. Arrival: Please arrive with clean skin. Do not apply makeup, lotions, perfumes, or aftershaves on the day of treatment. You will be at the office for 2-3 hours; please plan accordingly.

During Treatment

  1. Protective Eyewear: You will be provided with protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the blue light during treatment.

  2. Sensations: You may experience a mild burning or tingling sensation during the treatment. This is normal. Please inform your dermatologist if the sensation becomes uncomfortable.

  3. Duration: The treatment session will last approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Post-Treatment Care

  1. Immediate Care: Post-treatment, your skin may appear red and feel slightly swollen. This is a normal reaction and should subside within a few hours.

  2. Sun Protection: Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours after treatment. When going outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and seek shade when possible.

  3. Moisturize: Keep the treated area moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion to soothe the skin.

  4. Avoid Irritants: For 48 hours post-treatment, avoid using products containing retinoids, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or other potential irritants.

  5. Healing: It's normal for the treated areas to crust or flake off within 7-10 days post-treatment. Do not pick at these areas, as this can lead to scarring.

  6. Follow-Up: Schedule a follow-up appointment with your dermatologist to assess your treatment results and discuss any concerns.
