What is permethrin?

Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid used as a topical treatment primarily for scabies and head lice. It acts by affecting the nervous system of the parasites, leading to paralysis and death.

What are possible side effects of permethrin?

While generally well-tolerated, some individuals might experience:

  • Mild burning or stinging

  • Redness

  • Itching or rash

  • Swelling of the scalp

How is permethrin used?

  • For scabies: After thoroughly washing and drying the skin, apply permethrin cream to the entire body from the neck down, leaving it on for 8 to 14 hours before washing it off.

  • For head lice: Apply the lotion or cream rinse to the affected area and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing.

Precautions to consider:

  • Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes.

  • For external use only.

  • Not recommended for use in children under two months of age.
