Salicylic Acid

What is salicylic acid?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its exfoliating properties. Commonly found in over-the-counter acne treatments, it helps shed dead skin cells from the epidermis, preventing pores from becoming clogged. Beyond acne, it's also used in treatments for warts, psoriasis, and dandruff due to its keratolytic action, which promotes the shedding of skin cells.

What are possible side effects of salicylic acid?

While salicylic acid is generally safe for most skin types, some individuals might experience mild skin irritation, dryness, or peeling. Rarely, more severe reactions like redness, burning, or itching can occur. It's essential to start with lower concentrations to gauge skin sensitivity and to use a moisturizer to counteract potential dryness.

How is salicylic acid used?

Salicylic acid comes in various forms, including cleansers, toners, spot treatments, and medicated pads. The frequency and method of application depend on the product's type and concentration. For acne treatments, it's typically applied once or twice daily after cleansing. For warts, specific salicylic acid patches or solutions can be applied as directed.
