Valchlor (Mechlorethamine Gel)

What is Valchlor?

Valchlor (mechlorethamine) is a topical gel form of the alkylating drug mechlorethamine. Traditionally used in its intravenous form as a chemotherapeutic agent, the topical version is specifically designed to treat mycosis fungoides-type cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), a rare type of skin cancer. Valchlor works by damaging the DNA in cancer cells, preventing their growth and division.

What are possible side effects of Valchlor?

Common side effects of Valchlor include skin irritation, redness, itching, and swelling at the application site. Some patients may experience hyperpigmentation or skin infections. More severe side effects, although less common, can include allergic reactions, secondary skin cancers, and embryo-fetal toxicity. Due to its potential to cause harm when absorbed through the skin, it's important for individuals, including caregivers, to avoid direct skin contact with the gel or areas where the gel has been applied.

How is Valchlor used?

Valchlor is applied topically once daily to the affected areas of the skin. It's crucial to follow the recommended application procedures, which include wearing disposable nitrile gloves when applying the gel and washing hands thoroughly after the application. Areas treated with Valchlor should not be covered with occlusive dressings. Before starting treatment, and regularly during treatment, patients should have dermatologic assessments to check for potential side effects or signs of secondary skin cancers.

Precautions:

Due to the potential risks associated with Valchlor, it's vital to use the medication only under the guidance of a dermatologist or oncologist familiar with MF-CTCL and its treatments. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those planning to become pregnant, should discuss potential risks with their healthcare provider.
