Cantharidin (Beetlejuice) Instructions
Introduction
Cantharidin, commonly known as Beetlejuice, is a substance extracted from the Blister beetle. It's specifically designed for treating viral skin infections such as warts and molluscum. The treatment aims to create a blister around the infected area, which, when peeled off, should also remove the wart or molluscum.
Warning: Do not attempt to apply cantharidin yourself. The substance can be hazardous if not administered by a qualified medical professional.
Immediate Post-Treatment Care
Duration of Medicine
Initial Phase: After the application, the area may or may not be bandaged, depending on its location on the body.
Wash Off: Remove the medicine with soap and water 3-4 hours after the application.
Reminder: Set an alarm on your phone to ensure timely removal of the medicine, as extended exposure can lead to excessive blistering.
Monitoring the Treated Area
Blister Formation: If a blister hasn't formed after 3-4 hours, it's permissible to leave the medicine on, while checking every 30-60 minutes.
Maximum Duration: Do not leave the medicine on for more than 6 hours.
Subsequent Care
Blister Management
Do Not Break: Once a blister has formed, refrain from breaking it. Allow it to resolve naturally.
Cleaning: You can wash the area as usual but avoid removing the roof of the blister.
Bandaging: While not mandatory, you may choose to bandage the area for comfort.
Pain and Discomfort
Mild Discomfort: Some level of discomfort is to be expected but should not escalate to severe pain.
Severe Pain: If you experience significant pain, contact the office immediately.
Long-Term Care and Follow-Up
Cosmetic Concerns
Redness or Discoloration: Temporary changes in skin color may occur but generally fade over time.
Ongoing Treatments
Follow-Up Visits: Multiple sessions may be needed for complete resolution of warts or molluscum. These are generally spaced at intervals of 3-6 weeks.
By adhering to these guidelines, you'll be better equipped to manage the treatment process and potential side effects. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
