Topical Retinoids

What are topical retinoids?

Topical retinoids, such as adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene, and trifarotene, are Vitamin A derivatives commonly employed for acne management and skin aging. These agents work by reducing oil production, unclogging pores, and stimulating collagen formation beneath the skin. This leads to improved skin texture, reduced appearance of wrinkles, diminished hyperpigmentation, and a lower risk of scarring. As a result, they are often considered a cornerstone in comprehensive acne treatment plans.

What are possible side effects of topical retinoids?

When initially used, topical retinoids can cause significant dryness and irritation. It's crucial to note that these side effects are expected and do not indicate an allergy to the medication. The dryness and irritation generally subside after a few weeks. To mitigate these side effects, either increase your moisturizer application or consider applying the retinoid every other day until your skin acclimates.

How are topical retinoids used?

For best results, use a mild skin cleanser like Cetaphil or Cerave in conjunction with the topical retinoid. Cleanse your face thoroughly before applying the retinoid. Initially, it's advisable to use a small, pea-sized amount for the entire face. Application is usually recommended at bedtime, as some retinoids can degrade when exposed to sunlight. Apply the retinoid first, followed by a moisturizer if needed. Avoid the eye area and take precautions against sun exposure, as retinoids can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight.
