Imiquimod (Aldara)

What is imiquimod?

Imiquimod is a topical medication that activates your immune system to target affected cells in various skin conditions. In dermatology, it is commonly used for treating both infectious and cancerous conditions, such as warts, molluscum contagiosum, actinic keratosis (precancerous lesions), early basal cell carcinomas, and cutaneous lymphomas.

What are possible side effects of imiquimod?

Imiquimod works by stimulating immune cells, which can lead to skin irritation. Typically, this irritation can be managed with emollients like Vaseline or Aquaphor, or with over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream.

How is imiquimod used?

Imiquimod is available in small packets, and a small amount is usually sufficient to cover the affected skin area. The cream is generally left on for approximately 12 hours before rinsing. If you bathe in the morning, you would typically apply the cream at night, and vice versa. The frequency of application—daily, five times a week, or three times a week—depends on the specific condition being treated.
