Selenium Sulfide

What is Selenium Sulfide?

Selenium sulfide is an antifungal agent primarily used to treat dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and certain fungal infections of the skin, such as tinea versicolor. It works by slowing the growth of the yeast that causes these conditions. Selenium sulfide is commonly found in over-the-counter and prescription shampoos and lotions such as Selsun Blue.

How does Selenium Sulfide work?

Selenium sulfide's mechanism of action includes:

  1. Antifungal Activity: It disrupts the metabolic processes of specific fungi, preventing their growth and proliferation.

  2. Reducing Skin Cell Turnover: By decelerating the rapid turnover of skin cells, it reduces symptoms like flaking and scaling commonly seen in conditions like dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

What are possible side effects of Selenium Sulfide?

While many people tolerate selenium sulfide well, some potential side effects include:

  • Skin irritation or dryness

  • Hair loss or hair discoloration

  • Greasy or oily scalp or skin

  • Changes in hair texture

More severe side effects, although rare, might include:

  • Rashes, hives, or itching

  • Swelling, especially of the face, throat, or tongue

  • Severe dizziness

  • Trouble breathing

How is Selenium Sulfide used?

The use of selenium sulfide varies based on the condition being treated. For conditions like dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis:

  1. Wet the hair and scalp thoroughly

  2. Apply the product as directed, creating a lather

  3. Allow the product to remain for a specified duration, usually 3-5 minutes

  4. Rinse thoroughly

For conditions like tinea versicolor, the application might be on the affected skin areas, and instructions should be closely followed.

Precautions:

  • Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with water.

  • Use the product only as directed and do not apply more frequently than recommended.

  • If skin irritation or an allergic reaction develops, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider.
